What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a proven therapy backed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). This innovative approach is designed to help individuals process traumatic memories and reduce the symptoms associated with them.

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR is highly recommended for those dealing with PTSD, CPTSD, depression, anxiety, phobias, and addictions triggered by tough life events like accidents, abuse, or loss.

What Happens in EMDR?

The EMDR therapy process consists of 8 phases, these include history taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure and reevaluation.  During the EMDR processing phase, you'll experience gentle side-to-side eye movements or tapping, which helps to process and ease the intensity of traumatic memories. This allows you to recall these memories without feeling overwhelmed. Unlike traditional talk therapies, EMDR doesn't require extensive verbal processing, making it ideal for those who struggle to articulate their emotions.

How Long Does EMDR Last?

Typically, EMDR therapy consists of 6-15 sessions, each lasting about an hour to 90 minutes. However, the duration can vary based on individual needs and the severity of the trauma. Most people start noticing the benefits straight away.

How Do I Know if EMDR Works?

Studies show that EMDR significantly reduces PTSD and CPTSD symptoms for the long term. Progress is tracked throughout the therapy, ensuring you're on the path to healing.

What's Expected of Me?

To achieve the best results, it's important to stay engaged throughout treatment. Often, we recommend twice-weekly sessions. Commitment is key, and with dedication, EMDR can be truly transformative.

Benefits of EMDR vs. Traditional Therapy

EMDR therapy offers several advantages over traditional therapy. It often leads to faster results, with many individuals experiencing significant symptom reduction in a shorter time frame. Additionally, EMDR's approach doesn't require extensive verbal processing of traumatic memories, making it suitable for those who find it distressing to recount their experiences.

EMDR Vs Traditional Therapy

The structured nature of EMDR and the use of bilateral stimulation help regulate emotions during sessions. Moreover, EMDR targets the underlying mechanisms of trauma at a neurological level, facilitating the processing and integration of distressing memories more effectively than traditional talk therapy alone.

EMDR Therapy Overview

Using EMDR offers a holistic and efficient approach to trauma healing, addressing both the psychological and physiological aspects of trauma. In addition to PTSD, EMDR is effective for complex trauma (CPTSD), addiction, OCD, anxiety, depression, panic, phobias, and even performance enhancement.
